I find that the topic of tipping usually brings out the worst in people. Next time you're at a restaurant just imagine that its up to you, the customer, to go into the kitchen and tell them what you want to eat. Then every 5-10-15 etc minutes you keep getting up to check if your order is ready. If it is, then you and your entire table go and get the food from the kitchen , which will probably take multiple trips. If you drop it, tough luck, you have to pay for it again, or go home. Getting alcoholic beverages would require you to go to the bar multiple times as well to check on the order. What's to stop other customers from taking your food and alcohol if it's just sitting there for longer than it's needs to be. No one will know. You get up, as you've finished your meal, and head towards the exit. You get stopped by the manager and he tells you you need to take the dishes back to the dish pit, rinse them off, wipe of your table , sweep the floor, and reset the napkins and silverware. Eventually you'll stop and think " i shouldve just stayed home". After all is said and done you tell the manager that you, the customer, deserve some sort of compensation for everything you've done. He smiles and cheerfully says " sorry we don't do tips here"

I Serve in Canada and one thing people should know is, in my city at least, on average 5% all sales a server makes are taken from the tips and given to the kitchen an support staff. So if you sell 1000$ worth of product, you have to 'tipout' $50. That means that when a table tips less than 5%, the server is literally Paying for the guest to eat at the restaurant

The worst part is if you don't tip at 15% the waitress is loosing money in income tax. Revenu Canada tax her as if she got a 15% tip in each transaction. That because they cheated by not declaring the tip as income in the past... So they expect you to pay the 15% even if the service is bad because you understand the restaurant is underpaying her and the tax man will charge for it.

I was a pizza delivery driver for 2 years and have recently switched over to Uber Eats delivery. If I'm being honest it does suck when customers don't tip, but I have to remember that as an employee I shouldn't expect anything from the customer. It's our job to serve and the customer's job to be served, not the other way around. The thing that gets to me is all these people who willingly sign up for delivery jobs or waiting staff jobs with the full expectation that the customer will tip and if they don't they are an asshole, and it's very profitable. Just go to any girl's twitter who works in a restaurant. There is a 100% chance she's posted something about some customer who didn't tip her, even though she already made $19 per hour that day. The restaurant gets away with paying low wages, while the employee still makes bank and all the while the customer is sitting there sweating because they are worried that a $20 tip isn't good enough. It's bullshit. And the waiters will say "Oh well we provide a service so you should tip for our hard work". Shut up Britanny the guy who cooked my food provided me a service and they make less than half of what you do. I will gladly get up out of my seat and walk to the soda fountain if it saves me $10, and on my way over there I'll hand Dave the fry cook a $10 bill

Might as well post this tip as most people I tell are surprised: 20% tip on $23.56: take 10% (just move the decimal point) so you get $2.36, multiply by 2 for $4.72 and you're done. 15% tip so take 10% for $2.36, get half of that $1.18, add them together for $3.54 and you're done. Not sure why it surprises people, but percentages work just like normal numbers.

The first 9 seconds of the video sums up my philosophy on tipping. And mind you, I over-tip when I do tip (30%-50%). As far as servers not being paid enough... I mean... We're all adults here, right? I used to work a job that didn't pay enough, so I got a new job. Crisis averted. I'm here to pay for the food. It's your employer's responsibility to pay you (adequately) for your labor. The tip is for your exceptional service, not the bare minimum (or below average) service.

Why is everyone so confused about this. As an American not many people actually calculates 15-20% at your average restaurant (might be different at a 5 star restaurant but then again if you can afford to eat there in the first place 15-20% might as well be lose change). What most people do is leave a few extra dollars($2-$10 on average) on the table when paying the bill.

It’s pretty clear you’ve never worked in the industry or done enough research. Servers and bartenders have to tip out the restaurant on a PERCENTAGE of their sales. So if you gave your server a $5 tip on a $100 bill and their tip out was 8% (which is common in Canada) they would literally be forced to pay for part of your bill.

At many places (North America), if you don't tip, the server actually loses money... They have to tip out the bartender and kitchen at the end of the night based on their total sales. If your bill is $100 and you don't tip, I'm losing $5 or $6 just for you to eat at the restaurant (if I'm serving you, for example).

i wish the united states would switch to a system in which wait staff was actually just paid a living wage. that being said, if you don’t tip it will often directly hurt your servers income, and not just because they aren’t making money off of your meal. tip share exists, meaning that if you don’t tip your server, then they are actively paying out of pocket for you to eat. the higher the bill, the more they pay. thus the need for a higher tip. the system is broken, but i’m tired of paying for you fucks to eat food that i have to bring you, clean up when you leave, and try to be nice to you while you talk to me like i’m less than a human being. so please tip.

Tipping 15%: A Tutorial The bill is $135.67 Move the decimal one digit higher. 13.567 is 10% of 135.67. 5% is half of 10%. 13.56 is close enough to 14 Half of 14 is 7 .5x + .10x = .15x 7 + 13.56 = 20.56 15% of $135.67 is approximately $20. *confetti* I usually will do the quikmafs and then round a bit more to a nicer number. 155.67? Nah. Take .67 cents off that tip. After all that rounding, compared to actually pulling out a calculator, I tipped $1 under the “exact” minimum amount society suggests.

Tipping to subsidise restaurant's bad pay thus encouraging the race to the bottom is basically the little less morbid version of Asian gangs that kidnap healthy kids, mutilate them, and turn them to beggars. If you pay those forced beggars, the gang will see it as a viable business model, thus more kids are kidnapped and more badly mutilated. On one hand you wouldn't want the waiter to struggle, on the other hand, you're prolonging the cycle and making things worse in the long run.
