@IM Wercs yes private insurance is not the same as health-care itself. The doctors will still be private, the hospitals will still be private. The government will be the single payer of them for the main medical care. No copays or deductibles for us at the point of service, but taxes will go up less than what we pay in premiums now. It's not a takeover of the the healthcare industry, just the parasitic insurance companies.

34:46 You're implying that Medicare for ALL is asking to get rid of private hospitals. It is not. We just want the INSURANCE to be public.

So my hot take. The public option has the vulnerability of private insurance raising it cost to those of higher risk to lower the cost of the healthy and young. The healthy and young will then choose to gain private and the chronically sick or high risk individuals will choose the public option. If we make it so the government HAS to provide insurance (an easy one for insurance companies lobbyist to back) to anyone that wants it then they will be unable to force the chronically sick off and have to either raise the price for the healthy (making the problem worse) or run at a loss. This will encourage those on the right to point to it as a failing system and this is after they have done everything they can at the state level to get things to this point. Look at how they even refused medicare and medicaid dollars just to hurt people and point at the ACA as not working. It would only be a matter of time before it popularity wavers and poisons the discussions about socializing any aspect of healthcare further. Pragmatically, it might work better short term but I feel a public option in the long term is a disaster. Another example on where we are at politically and reenforce the idea that the right wing will work to destroy healthcare is how Trump just did a speach where he said he and his party have always worked to "protect those with pre existing conditions." Unfortunately, their voters are so (insert almost any negative thing here) they are actively voting for the same people that have worked and likely to succeed at taking them away. This leaves no doubt they actually could run on "giving more people healthcare" as bidens plan still leaves 10 mil uninsured and use that talking point to destroy a public option, because the winning argument will always be universal healthcare coverage when anything less results in grotesque stories for politicians to weaponize and just return us to a overpriced private insurance mandate as it was originally a right wing plan to begin with. That's checkmate for the right, a public option that can't move the sick or the poor off its plan as quickly as private insurance is check.

I love destiny here, in that he's actually pointing out why hard problems are hard. The best example was when trihex says, well, it's just 100 companies emitting most of that CO2, as if then we can just take care of those companies, but as destiny points out, those are the 100 companies producing nearly all the energy we need and use. So it's really a matter of saying that all the energy we need and use is causing the emissions and that we're going to make EVERYTHING we produce more expensive if we ban or tax fossil fuels, which is going to hurt the poorest the most. Realizing that there's a reason there's a problem, and it's that we want and need cheap energy to have a high standard of living, that it's not just a bunch of evil lobbyists and mustache-twirling CEOs destroying the planet because of greed, is something we don't see nearly enough of.

2:30:20 a german guy here. I think you are confusing some things here. Yes we have 3 forms of secondary schools: Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium. After you are done with your 4 years of elementary school, your teacher recommend to which secondary school one should go. When you graduate from Gymnasium you have Abitur, which basically means you can go to university. Most people in germany who went to university got Abitur. Another way to get into university is if you go to a Gesamtschule, which basically is a school that combines Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium. I don't know how it works in detail but it should be possible to also make your Abitur there. An alternative way to get into university is by making a Meisterbrief. Here I know even less how it really works but it involves apprenticing, but it can be done even if you (only) graduated from Hauptschule or Realschule. That said, we have this system long before we had free university, so Destiny's argument doesn't really work imo. Also in the last 1-2 decades our government seems to try to get more people into university.

The ACA got a grand total of 2 Republican votes, and it was propagandizes as a "government takeover of healthcare", this bipartisan "pragmatic" approach is a fucking FANTASY! Ironically the only people proposing the "unicorns and rainbows" plans are these centrists like Destiny thinking that their Obamacare "expansion" will be treated any differently than M4A by the Republicans.

23 วันที่ผ่านมา
FJBRDALLAS
FJBRDALLAS

So destiny just conveniently forgot that congress has a dismal approval rate, that gerrymandering is so disgustingly effective that Republicans consistently get less votes than democrats yet still win more seats (not much of a mandate), that lobbyist are the ones who actually write most of our laws, that moderate democrats got their ass handed to them the past two elections and that they barely represent anyone in the country, that insurance works when everyone pays into it (people who use it a lot and people who don"t) Medicare works because we all pay into it even though we cant use it until retiring, if only old people had to pay into it then it wouldn't work. A public option would be populated by the sick people the insurance companies don't want to insure and it (if it survives) would necessarily have to be funded by the rest of the taxpayers. So, what would be the point on keep paying private insurers for my healthcare if when I finally need it they would find any excuse to drop me into the shitty underfunded public option that may be slashed because of budget cuts. Think about it, this compromise would be even worse than just never having to pay for any insurance because you could work 25 years while your employer pays insurance premiums for you, you pay a premium, you pay taxes that are in part being used for the public option, and you being paying for medicare. And then at 57 you get into an accident, or you get cancer, or something like that, your private insurer doesn't even cover the full amount at first (deductibles, co-pay), then when you are start to get really expensive they stop paying your doctors or they find any obscure reason to drop you (as they have done in the past millions of times before). So know you are dropped into the public option which you probably cant afford and have very little options when it comes to treatment and finally die because of it before you can collect medicare. Congratulations, you were so utterly fucked by the system that you and your employer prepaid like a million dollars of healthcare you never got. Fuck that, just fuck that. Either we stop being so anal and we realize we can all get sick and old therefore its convenient for us to have a single system we all pay into, or we don't have any insurance at all and let people pocket all that money that right now is just going to make a few people billionaires at the expense of so much human suffering.

I am not sure Destiny's analogy of the food industry and the private health insurance industry is a good one. The food industry makes money by selling their product (food) while the private insurance industry makes money by selling the insurance and denying to provide the product (healthcare) whenever possible. Am I missing something? Can someone elaborate?

1:19:04 I travel up and down the southcoast of MA making deliveries to businesses so I talk to probably 200-250 regular people a week. Climate change and politics come up pretty often. In my experience people are concerned about climate change, they link it to the shifting seasons and the hurricanes and they want to do something about it. The thing I see is that they're waiting on the leadership and out politicians to make lawas and give guidance because they're aware that a paper straw isn't going to do jack shit.

My god Trihex is soooo disconnected from working class people in the USA, how much more working class people around the world. You think Chinese sweatshop workers that number in the hundreds of millions even know that climate change exists? Even the ones that make tshirts talking about climate change wouldn't know about it. Trihex exemplifies the stereotype of the american that is ignorant of what the world is like outside the USA, except its probably more like he doesn't know what the world is like outside his home.

I think the difference between food and health care could be that food is easier and cheaper to produce than a mayor medical treatment, therefore could be morally justified to sell food than to always sell private health care. And for Global Warming; that's pretty much true, the majority of the people in the world don't care or don't even know/believe that the world will be fucked. Not that anyone cares hehe.
