As of 2015, there were at least 1,441 federally recognized places in the United States with racial slurs in their names. Hasan takes a look at some of these streams, rivers, mountains, and other landmarks and discusses the process for changing their names to something less racist. Hasan then travels to a location in New York City with an offensive name and tries to change it once and for all.

Until people stop owning the N word, negro will still be used. Set the example if you want change. If you're ok with calling yourself the N word, why the hell does negro offend? #HYPOCRITES

Do we know who named them or why they named them. I agree, some of these names are offensive and should be changed, but some may bear a greater significance. Some of these places were named in times where the word “negro”, for example, did not have the weight that it has in today world. I respect and appreciate what he is trying to do, but I hate that we are changing places names without finding out why it was given it’s name. Now I’m going to research negro point.

I'm also confused on why foreign references or names are supossed to be racist? isn't it an inmigrant country? shouldn't it celebrate diversity instead of hide it? "Dago Frank Creek" is bad?? Italians! please back me up!

I'm from Colombia. All your examples being "negro" and I don't get why naming a color would still be racist. It should literally mean the same as saying azul, blanco or verde. I know the usage of the word as offensive in the 70s but com'n! if it's about race wouldn't it be better to reclaim the word and change the meaning of it? why instead of erasing the word of the dictionary don't you place monuments there to honor the former slaves who probably built the place anyway?. Why do you insist to give a racist meaning to the word? and why is it more racist than black? because it's in spanish? Think about it, it's nonsense. Just reclaim the word, own it and honor it proudly! That's the most antiracist thing that you could do in my humble opinion.

It simply means black colour in Spanish. Like black river, black mountain and so on. Spanish were the first conquistadors.

C'mon, man! "Oriental" is WAY racist. You know"Asian" is the accepted term. But wtf do I know. Being a white male in my early fifties, I can't hardly help but being racist. I never thought I was. That's the thing about racism. You don't have to feel that way to be racist.

Why are you Americans obsessed with race & skin colour ? It’s revolting to say the least. Race is always mentioned in your culture/media/narrative etc, as if it’s important. If I was to emphasise somebody’s eye colour constantly would I not seem bizzare or retarded in some way ? Yet you Americans CONSTANTLY refer to each other’s skin colour ? Very sad. The easiest way to divide people is to focus on their differences, yet we all bleed red. Many people now days only seek to race bait & divide and conquer. What a tragedy. JOHN 3:16 ❤️

Fun fact, the word "negro" actually used to be a polite term for a black person. Ten-year-old me, who read lots of historical fiction, had no idea about its current status as a racial slur until I used it in front of my brother and he was like, "uhhh, you do know that's a bad word, right??"

Still doesn't answer the question, what exactly are people in that country proud of? America is literally a cesspool of hatred and bigotry. How do you people leave your home knowing every other person around you has a weapon? I'd be afraid just to open my door if I lived there.

Millenial discover spanish has been spoken in North America for over 500 years. The toponym Negro has been used centuries before africans were brought to America. How would you say black in spanish otherwise?

Unpopular opinion, negro is just black(the color) in spanish. There’s plenty of places in the us with hispanic names because of well, history. Are all of those places called negro racist? I live 5 miles away from a black mountain and it has nothing to do with black people, the mountain is black IDK I Don’t want to sound racist just look up the history of the place and who named it, otherwise you might be Anglo washing? your geography. An alternate solution, when in doubt go back to it’s native american name.

Yes there is truth to all of this and I am so grateful to live in a country where we can have this open dialogue. But there are PLENTY of Arabic countries (Saudi Arabia being the major one) that don’t even allow us to explore or discuss how racist and intolerant of other religions they are. Maybe Hasan Minaj can do a video on that... of course he won’t

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I dont think people should change those names that nowadays are offensive. Now people shouldn't be naming new things with racial slurs, but if a mountain got called "Negro Mountain" in the past, we shouldn't change it because we have to remember the history behind that naming of that mountain. Why was it called "Negro Mountain" ? Who named that mountain that way, which was the context (obviously the answer is found in that part of the history that is about slavery). I know it's kinda hard to see those names, but if you want to remember your past, this contributes a lot. Names don't hurt anyone, but if the changing of those racial slur-names is going to benefit anyone, it is going to be the people who actually want you to forget that part of slavery.
